Audit Your Small Business Marketing (Choose Your Own Adventure-Style)

What Will Yours Reveal?

Let’s set the scene:

You're sitting at your laptop on a Wednesday afternoon. There's a half-empty coffee mug next to you (probably - definitely cold by now), and you've got about seventeen tabs open.

You're trying to figure out what you should be doing with marketing for your small business. More specifically, you're trying to figure out why what you are doing isn't quite working.

There’s a jargon-y article about email marketing, something someone said about Instagram, a Canva project you started last week, that marketing podcast everyone recommended (paused halfway through)...

One of those open tabs, though, is this blog post… and things are about to get really interesting!

Here's what I know: effective marketing isn't just about doing one thing really well! It's about making sure all the essential pieces of your marketing ecosystem work together.

And while I can't tell you exactly what an audit of your marketing would reveal without actually looking, I can show you what often happens. Pick the scenario below that sounds most like your current reality, and let's walk through it together!

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

What small business marketing scenario sounds most like yours?

👀
"I need more followers and visibility"

You're posting regularly, learning things about SEO, maybe even running some ads. It feels like the missing piece is more visibility, like if you just had more followers, more traffic, more people seeing your content, that's when business would really take off.

💻
"I know I SHOULD be sending email newsletters but I don't know where to start"

Email marketing is on your should-do list, but… figuring out the tech sounds boring at best. You're not sure what to write or how often to send. You’re pretty sure you have some subscribers sitting there unused, but you just can’t seem to start.

😵‍💫
"I've tried a bunch of stuff and I'm not seeing results"

You’ve tried it all: posting on Instagram, starting a newsletter that fizzled, setting up Google My Business… all the things people say to do, but nothing seems to actually work. When are you going to find the thing that actually clicks in your marketing?

Pick one and keep reading - we’re about to meet for a (mini) Strategic Audit!

👀 “I think we need more followers…”

“Cecilia,” you say, “I’ve been hearing about your Strategic Audit for a while. Let’s go ahead and do it, because I’ve got to figure out how to grow my audience.”

When we start chatting, you tell me that you think you need more followers. Better reach. More people seeing your content. You’ve heard advice a million times to post more, be on more platforms, figure out the algorithm, go viral… basically, do whatever you can to get in front of more eyeballs.

After all, you see plenty of other businesses out there who have way more followers than you do, which must be at least half of the reason they seem to be doing so well, right?

Well, let’s find out!

As I start your Audit, get to work, and start digging into everything, I find lots of good news.

You’ve been feeling stressed about social media, but it turns out your engagement rate is pretty solid! When I compare it to industry benchmarks, you're right where you should be, sometimes even above average. The people who are finding you are genuinely interested. They're liking, commenting, saving your posts. That's proof that your content resonates!

Then I look at your website traffic and notice something interesting: you're getting decent visitors. Not massive numbers, but consistent. People are finding you. They're landing on your site.

But then I trace the journey. I click around like a potential client would. I look at your homepage, read your about page, check out your services. And here's what jumps out: your messaging isn't quite clear. I'm not entirely sure what makes you different or who exactly you serve best. And when I look at your website analytics, your “bounce rate” is high.

People are finding you, but they're leaving quickly because they're not connecting with what they see. There's no clear next step. No obvious call to action. The path from "I found this business" to "I want to work with this business" isn't clear.

The Audit findings show that you don’t actually have a visibility problem! You have gaps when it comes to connection and conversion, though. You're getting in front of enough people for your business size and model. But those people aren't sticking around because the messaging isn't clicking, the visual presence isn't cohesive, and there's no clear invitation to take the next step.

Interesting, right? So now we know what’s really going on, but what should you do from here?

That’s what the Roadmap in your Audit is for.

💻 “I know I SHOULD be sending emails but I don't know where to start…”

“Here’s the thing, Cecilia,” you sigh. “I’ve been wanting to try your Strategic Audit for a while, but I already know there’s more I should be doing for my marketing and it’s not going to help to get a whole list of what I’ve been doing wrong. So… is this right for me?”

And I tell you YES, because I know the Audit is going to show us a lot of stuff you’ve been doing right that you haven’t even given yourself credit for.

Sure, it’s true that sending marketing emails has been sitting on your should-do list for longer than you want to admit. Maybe you have a contact form on your website. Maybe people have signed up for something at some point. But you've never sent anything, or you tried once and got so overwhelmed or annoyed by the tech that you gave up.

But here's what I see when I start digging into how your business actually works and looking at all the info and data behind the scenes.

I ask you to walk me through how you get clients, and as you're talking, I'm taking notes, because you're really good at building relationships. Your clients come back. They refer their friends. You have a reputation in your community. When you're talking to someone in person or following up with a past client, you know exactly how to connect, answer questions, make people feel taken care of.

So, guess what: you're already doing marketing! You just don't call it that. Word of mouth, client experience, referrals… that's all marketing. And you're clearly good at it.

Then, I pull up your website and look at the backend. (I'll show you where to find this, don't worry.) You actually have 73 (or 500, or 12) email addresses sitting there. People who reached out, signed up for something, expressed interest at some point. But you've never emailed them. Or maybe you did once, ages ago, and it was overwhelming so you never did it again.

And when I look at your social media (if you're even active there), I see you're relying entirely on platforms you don't control. If the algorithm decides not to show your post? That connection is gone. You have no direct way to reach people.

So what jumps out is that you have wonderful relationship-building strength! But right now, it mostly only scales as far as your personal reach. The people you meet face-to-face, the clients you talk to directly, the referrals that happen in conversation. There's no system for staying connected with everyone else.

Which tells us that you don't need to become a tech expert or content machine. You need infrastructure that lets you scale what you're already naturally good at.

That doesn’t sound as overwhelming, right?

So now we know what’s really going on, but what should you do from here?

That’s what the Roadmap in your Audit is for.

Find out what to do from here!

😵‍💫 “I've tried a bunch of stuff and I'm not seeing results”

By the time you make it to me, you’re pretty fed up. “I’ve been trying EVERYTHING, Cecilia. Nothing’s really working and I don’t know why… but maybe a Strategic Audit can help?”

YUP! It can!

Because I can tell you right now, your problem isn’t a lack of effort! You’ve been really trying.

You've posted on Instagram - sometimes consistently, sometimes in fits and starts when you remember or feel motivated. You started a newsletter at some point, sent maybe three issues, and then it just... fizzled. You updated your website copy. You tried that content strategy someone recommended. You joined a networking group. You experimented with Facebook ads for a bit, but it seemed pretty annoying to figure out (honestly, you’re not wrong about that!).

It is SO awesome that you’re as resourceful as you are. You really want to crack the code, and you’re putting the effort in!

AND it’s time to figure out what’s going on beneath the surface, so you don’t have to waste more time and stress trying more new tactics and ping-ponging from marketing “secret” to “secret.”

So we get started with your Audit, and I ask you to walk me through everything you've been doing. And I mean everything - where you're posting, what you're creating, what you've tried.

Then I dive in. I open your Instagram, your website, your Facebook page if you have one. I look at your last few email newsletters if you've sent any. I'm taking notes, screenshotting things, tracing the path a potential client would take.

And here's what becomes really clear really fast: you're doing a bunch of different things, but they’re not all working in alignment. And that’s where the gap in results is coming from!

When I look at your Instagram feed, some of the emails you’ve sent, and your website, I’m not really seeing a cohesive brand presence: something that would make me think, “oh yeah, that’s definitely [your business]” when it crosses my screen. And if your brand’s look/ feel/ messaging aren’t cohesive, it’s much harder to build trust and be truly memorable.

Then I check out your last five Instagram posts, and while some of the content is awesome, I’m not seeing invitations within the posts. They just kind of share something interesting and leave it there. No “here's how to work with me,” no “subscribe for emails so you don’t miss our next sale!” You're creating content, but it's not guiding anyone toward actually working with you.

It’s similar on your website, I notice. When I click around like a potential client, I see some cool stuff, but I’m not entirely sure what you want me to do next. And when I search Google for the type of service you offer in your area, you don't come up. Your website isn't optimized for search at all (and your Instagram bio isn’t, either!).

So you’re there, but you're not really discoverable beyond people who already follow you.

This is really common when you're trying to do everything. Without a clear, intentional strategy (which can be simple!) behind all of that effort, it’s hard to get the results you want.

Especially if you're doing what you saw work for someone else's business without considering whether it actually fits your business model, your audience, or honestly, your capacity. (Again, so common!)

Okay, so: how can you channel all of that effort more strategically? What should you do next?

That’s what the Roadmap in your Audit is for.

Find out what to do from here!

👀 From hustling for followers to building connection

Your Roadmap (the last part of the Strategic Audit!) focuses on better serving the people who are already finding you, not just looking for new people to add to your audience.

It includes next steps for:

  • Clarifying your messaging so people immediately understand what you do and who it's for

  • Creating visual consistency across all your platforms so you're recognizable and memorable

  • Developing a content strategy that builds actual connection, not just engagement for engagement's sake

  • And setting up clear calls to action and next steps so interested people know exactly how to work with you!

We’ll also look at some next steps for your email strategy, because right now, if someone finds you on Instagram and likes what they see, the only way to stay connected is hoping the algorithm shows them your next post. Email gives you a direct line to people who are interested, helping you stay connected with them and remain top of mind.

The big shift here is that you have a plan to go from “I need thousands more followers” to “I’m creating a stronger experience for the people already paying attention to me.” From chasing numbers to building genuine connection.

From feeling behind to realizing you're actually further along than you thought, you just need to shore up the other parts of your marketing ecosystem.

Take me to the end!

💻 From “should-dos” to “can-dos”

Your Roadmap (the last part of the Strategic Audit!) lays out a simple, structured way to get going with email marketing.

It includes a plan for things like:

  • Setting up your email platform properly, step by step, so it's actually usable

  • Creating templates so you're not reinventing the wheel every time you want to send a newsletter

  • Setting up a simple welcome sequence so new subscribers immediately hear from you

  • Figuring out a realistic sending schedule you can actually stick with - maybe monthly, maybe quarterly to start

The entire plan is grounded in what actually makes sense for your business, your capacity, and your actual goals. You’re not going to be sending emails for emails’ sake, because now you have a clear purpose - staying top of mind with past clients, sharing useful updates, and making it easy for people to refer you.

Remember, you already know how to connect with people! We're just creating a tool that lets you do it with more people, more consistently.

And we'll connect this to your other strengths. That word-of-mouth magic you have? Email helps you maintain relationships between in-person interactions. Those people who found you but weren't ready yet? Email keeps you in their orbit until they are.

The steps in the Roadmap take you from "I'm so behind on email and I don't know where to start" to "I have a clear plan and I actually understand how this works for my business." From feeling guilty about what you're "supposed" to do to having a strategy that extends your natural strengths. From hoping people remember you, to having a system for staying genuinely connected.

And here's what I often see happen once clients implement their email strategy: past clients who'd gone quiet reach back out! People who signed up for the list a year ago finally inquire because they've been reading along! The warmest leads often aren't on social media, they're in your inbox, because you're talking directly to people who actually want to hear from you.

You don't need to become someone you're not. You just need the right plan to scale what you're already great at.

Take me to the end!

😵‍💫 From doing it all to doing it intentionally

Your Roadmap (the last part of the Strategic Audit!) shows you how to unite all of your efforts with a clear strategy, creating an effective through-line that ties all of your marketing together.

→ First, we're going to give you permission to stop doing some things. Yup! We're identifying which of your efforts are actually reaching your people and which ones you can let go of without guilt.

→ Then we identify some next steps you can take to create more clarity across your marketing. One clear message across everything you do, so when someone encounters your business, whether on Instagram, your website, or that networking event, they get a consistent sense of who you are and what you offer.

→ We'll also lay out some tweaks you can make to your visual consistency so your brand is actually recognizable. That might mean creating simple templates you can reuse, or defining a clear visual style you can stick to. The goal is: people should be able to recognize your content before they even see your name.

→ We’ll also identify where you can build in some simple but super effective conversion points. Everything you share needs to answer the question “what should I do next?” for your audience. That’s why we’ll prioritize incorporating clear calls to action that guide interested people toward working with you.

Because the Strategic Audit also analyzes where your ideal clients actually are, all of the steps in the Roadmap are informed by that info. Maybe you've been spending hours on Instagram when your people are actually more likely to search for someone like you on Google. Or maybe you've been ignoring email when that could be your most valuable channel. The Roadmap shows you where to focus so you're not just busy, you're strategic.

Now, you have clear next steps to take you from "I've tried everything and nothing works" to "I have a focused plan for the three things that will actually move my business forward."

From scattered effort across a dozen tactics to strategic energy on what matters for your specific business. From feeling like marketing doesn't work for you to understanding that disconnected tactics don't work for anyone (but a cohesive marketing ecosystem does).

The Roadmap gives you permission to let go of the things that aren't serving you and double down on what will. Less overwhelm, more clarity, actual momentum instead of just motion.

You weren't doing it wrong! You just needed someone to help you see which pieces were worth your energy, and how to make them all work together.

Take me to the end!

Making Small Business Marketing Both Simpler and More Strategic

You can't see your own marketing ecosystem clearly when you're standing in the middle of it. You're too close. You're comparing yourself to others who have completely different businesses. You're following advice that wasn't made for your specific situation.

But when someone can look at your whole marketing picture - your website, your social presence, your email systems (or lack thereof), how everything connects (or doesn't) - patterns emerge that you couldn't see on your own.

That's why every Strategic Audit examines your small business marketing through my ACCN Marketing Framework. I look at how you Attract people, how you Connect and build trust, how you Convert interest into action, and how you Nurture relationships over time. When you can see all four components and how they work together (or don't), suddenly your next steps become crystal clear.

The Audit also does something else that's pretty important: it gives you credit for what's already working.

I can't tell you how many small business owners come to me feeling like they're failing at marketing, only to discover they're actually really strong in certain areas. They just weren't recognizing it or building on it. The word-of-mouth referrals you're getting? That's proof your client experience is excellent! The engagement on your posts? Your content resonates! Those inquiries that don't convert? You're attracting interested people! Now we just need to smooth the path to working together.

You're probably doing better than you think in some areas, and the gaps are likely in places you didn’t even know to look. And now you do, and you know what to do next. You’re left with a focused, phased, clear approach: here's what matters most right now, here are some quick wins you can check off quickly, here's what comes after that, here's what can wait, and here’s what you can totally skip.

I can tell you this: the clarity from a Strategic Audit is beyond worth it. Understanding where you actually are, what's actually working, and what deserves your attention next… that's what turns small business marketing from a guessing game you’re sick of playing into something you can actually wrap your head around.

You get a custom-to-you Roadmap. You get to stop wondering if you're doing the right things. You get to see your whole marketing ecosystem and finally understand how the pieces fit together.
